Ballaun Stones

A 'ballaun' is a deep hemispherical cup hollowed out of a rock, a ballaun stone refers to the rock itself. Generally thought to date to the Bronze Age; their original purpose is unknown. Later they became assimilated into Christian practices where stones would be turned in the ballauns whilst praying, or cursing!
